Will I have a credit check?
Options
I’m wondering if anyone can help me, I’m happy that I have just had the news I got the administrator job I had an interview for in a prison.
I’m aware that Vetting Background checks and a DBS is required for the security clearances, I don’t have any criminal record and had continuous employment, however I’m worried that I need to ‘pass’ a credit check? I am currently half way through an IVA back from when me and my ex partner split as I couldn’t cope with the finances I was left to manage alone. I’m on track and never missed a payment.
Will they see this as me failing the Vetting process?
Thank you in advance 😊

I can’t speak for this position but back when I was in some serious financial difficulty I had to pass a credit check for a role.
I was concerned and emailed the recruiter just stating my worries who told me my problems weren’t what that would concern it was more fraud & such.
But it depends on position so may be worth asking1 -
Generally speaking, they're more concerned about people who are in debt and can be "influenced" (basically taking a bribe) by criminal organisations. Someone in an IVA, DMP or Bankruptcy is much less likely to be influenced, but it does depend on the organisation and what their criteria are. Why hide something you know might be an issue? Or to put it another way, if you think being in an IVA is an issue and they can find out about it, why not just tell them upfront. The worst they cant do is decline you, which you assume they'll do anyway when the credit check you.1

I assume you've answered all the questions so far, honestly.
If there are any further ones, do the same.
If they're looking for someone with perfect credit history they are going to have a problem.1 -
I'm a Prison Officer and was 2.5 years into a DMP when I applied, passed the credit check and vetting no problem. If I have further severe financial difficulties I'd have to declare it, especially any form of insolvency, there are also people I work with who have been on an IVA during their application and they also passed no problem.
If it's obvious your finances are under control, even if your history is poor you should be fine. End of the day they are looking at risks to corruption, having an IVA which is all up to date shows you are responsibly handling your finances and are not at risk of corruption.1 -
