Affordable laptop for GCSE student?

Hi all
I would be grateful if you could recommend a good laptop for my 15 year old son; he's going into Year 11 at school next month (hopefully!). It'll be primarily for completing his work, so there will be lots of browsing and he needs to access the software his school uses. Should I look at a refurbished laptop as a way of getting a better model for a cheaper price? The problem is, I have no idea what constitutes a 'better model' and the specs I should be looking for.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
Dalek

Only recommendation, dont go for anything with windows 10S, as it blocks you from downloading apps/programs/hardware that arent affiliated with microsoft.0

The Argos eBay site has quite a few refurbished laptops on offer. They used to be quite competitive but seem a bit more expensive nowadays.
Alternatively have a look at the hotukdeals website to see what deals are available at present.

Thank you for your replies; I don't want to spend more than £400. I'll have a look on those websites.0
