Free upgrade - company now wants it returned?

  • How did you pay for the original item?
If it was with a credit or debit card, it might be worthwhile contacting your card issuer and advising them not to accept any further payment requests from Hunters Knives just in case they try to take the extra money for the upgraded order.

Card companies can't stop payments to retailer in that way.
Banks are not the police, or set up to police iffy retailers.
There are ways and means that funds can be reclaimed.

Well, I can state with 100% certainty that some credit card companies allow this to happen.
A couple of years ago, I ordered an item online (PC software) and this was showing as next day delivery from stock and the retailer stated that payment would only be taken on dispatch.
After a week, the item hadn't arrived so I contacted the seller and was informed that they didn't have the goods in stock and it would be sent out within the next few days. This was too late for me so I asked them to cancel the order and was told that it was too late to do this (despite them not even having the disc in stock at that point) and that when received, I could return it for a refund. This was for an item costing almost £600 and I didn't want to have to wait for a refund.

I contacted Capitalone and advised them of the situation and asked them to decline the payment authorisation when it came in from the retailer and they agreed to do this.

As a aside OP has not posted the actual website, so it is possible (long shot) that it was not the genuine retailers site used.
true, but the google reviews don't look good on the genuine site either.
Plenty of reports of poor communication, false promises of free upgrades etc etc
