Handyman keeps cancelling - already paid for materials

Hi
Prior to lockdown we hired a handyman to reroof our outhouse and paid for materials so he could get them in.

Lockdown happened and we didn’t hear anything from him. When builders were allowed to go back to work we contacted him and he said he’d come do the work. On the morning he was due to come I hadn’t heard from him so sent him a text. He replied to say he was on his way. Two hours later no sign so texted him again - apparently his van had broken down...

He didn’t get back in touch so chased him a few days later and he said he’d just got his van back but that the electrics still weren’t working.

We’re now a month beyond when he was due to come and haven’t heard anything. I’ve chased again but yet to hear back.

Any advice on what we can do next? We either just want the ruddy thing done or get the materials cost back. We’re due to move soon and had said to the buyers the outhouse roof would be done so very frustrating!!

Thanks.

You go and get the materials off him in your car or send a taix to do it, or fetch him and meterials
Then employ another handyperson to get the job done.
    or
Negotiate with the buyers of your property the materials are here, you can get the work done

I agree. Find out when he is in and turn up and ask for the materials or the money and don't take no for an answer. If he says he hasn't got either you've got a problem.
It's something to remember though. Get the materials yourself if they have to be bought in advance. Then they tend to turn up for the work. If not it's quick to get someone else.

And you then need to make sure he understands it is his problem. I would go armed with a letter of intent, so he can expect you to apply to the SCC in a month from that date.
