Covid License Extension and Car Hire Abroad

Hi all, 

I need a bit of advice if anyone can help out. 

I'm travelling to Italy in a few days and am planning on hiring a car. My UK driving license expired in Feb 20, but due to Covid has had the automatic 7 month extension, which I understand was an EU regulation. 

If I arrive in Italy and hand over my license with its Feb expiry date printed on the front to the car hire company, will they actually allow me to hire a car?

Ensure you have N international DL as many rental firms will refuse rental if not. You can get at post office in 10 mins. My dad has travelled to Italy hundreds of times in the last 20 years and says it’s gotten especially essential in the last 2 years. He’s had to cancel
and get walk up rentals at the airport a couple of times and that costs a bomb
