Holiday booking

Hi hope I am in the right section.
We like many had to change our holiday from this year to next at an inflated price due to covid. Shortly after change my nephew was offered a new job/apprenticeship which means he cannot come. As per terms and conditions I fully expected to lose the deposit of £200 but to make a change they want a further £200 in addition to deposit. The lady from the call centre couldn't really explain  (possible language barriers) but said I had to pay. Possible admin charges etc do not add up to this. So for a holiday of £595 a person we will only save around £170 (I know figures don't add up but looking on line they don't either).
Before I bite the bullet and pay I was wondering if anyone could offer advice.
My booking is with First Choice.
Thanks x

The Covid issue is a red herring here.

You could have opted for a full refund, but instead opted to move the holiday to next year.

Your nephew being offered a new job is irrelevant to the Covid issue. You would treat this as a normal change to a holiday booking. Are you trying to cancel his booking? Or change the date?

How do you know so far ahead that he will not be able to come? He will have holiday entitlement.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • Given the state of the economy I'd be tempted to leave your nephew on the booking until the very last minute just in case (& I hope it doesn't) the job/apprenticeship falls through

You shouldn't be losing the deposit in addition to paying the £200 name change fee. I am guessing that the call centre meant you couldn't use the deposit to pay the name change fee; you have to pay the fee now but you will also still have paid a deposit that can be used when the final payment is due.
I.e. the holiday that was £595 is now £795 because of the name change (and the £200 name change fee has to be paid now) but you've already paid a £200 deposit so the outstanding balance to be paid later will be £795 - £200 (deposit) - £200 (fee) = £395.
