Car Accident

Hi Everyone,
Unfortunetly, I had an accident today when driving. I was driving up a road, when a flat pack van coming down the opposite way came down and some material, I think plastic came flying off the back of the van and has cracked 90% of my windscreen. The van didn't stop and sped away. I do have this all recorded of my dashcam. I stupidly drove my car back home as I've never been in this situation before. I called the police and they advised to fill in a crime report online, which I have done, but understand it can take some time to hear back given the covid situation we are all in. I'm just not sure what to do do next.
Do I contact my insurance or wait for a police report first?
I do have AA breakdown cover with my car so I don't know if they maybe able to help?
I do need my car ASAP so I don't know if I pay to fix this I can claim it back from insurance of wether to let them deal with it?
Any help would be great as I am so stressed about this.

Windscreen claims tend to have a smaller excess. I'd just phone the insurance and get it fixed. Give them the van details if yiuve got them, Breakdown cover won't sort it.
Last time my windscreen went I looked at having it done myself but it was cheaper and easier just to go through insurance.

As above - your insurers will fix the screen quickly.
Pass them the details of the van, but I suspect they won't bother pursuing it for a small claim. A police report won't help.

By flat pack I assume you mean flat bed, chances are the other driver was completely unaware of what happened. Speak to insurance and get it sorted, old bill and AA have no part to play.

If it was part of a loose load the police "should" be interested.

Agreed, can you get the company's name from the dashcam footage?

The police are usually vigilant when comes to commercial vehicles with unsafe loads - Provided there enough to identify the truck on your dash cam, give it to the police

Thanks for all the responses guy's. I appriciate your time answering and helping. I spoke to my insurance company and they said they will cover is at £115.00, but I would have to wait until the end of the month. Unfortunatly, I couldnt wait that long due to needing my car for work so today, I had to pay a 3rd party company £260.00 to fix the issue. Im gutted, but happy that it's fixed. I just really hope that the police can catch up with the driver who caused this because after thinking more on it, it could have been far worse such as personal injury or any other driver been effected as well. Does anyone know that if the police can find out who caused this, would I be able to claim from the insurance?
    Thanks.

If you have windscreen cover on your policy I would make a claim through it. The claims don't tend to have an excess if they can be repaired and the excess is small if they need to replace the windscreen.

Your insurer will then seek to recovery the money from the other side and these sort of claims don't tend to affect your no claims history but I would confirm with them before making the claim.
