Another vote for a Hyundai i10.
Carries 5 in a pinch, very TARDISy for luggage and a doddle to park.
Not a gas guzzler, cheap to tax and insure.

Well, I got my car today!
A 2014 Fiesta Zetec 1.25.
It's in good condition, good mileage, one previous owner. The dealership was a joy to deal with!
Fingers crossed there are no nasty surprises. But I must say I feel pretty comfortable with it all.
