Expedia v BA refund, who's liable?

Hi, booked a flight back in April with BA through Expedia. The flight was subsequently cancelled (by BA) and I've been back and forth with both Expedia and BA ever since. Expedia say it's BA's responsibility as the payment is made directly to them (I checked my credit card statement and even though I paid on the Expedia website it appears the money went to BA). BA say as the booking was made through Expedia it's their responsibility. Who should I be pursuing for this? or should I give up and claim back through my credit card company? Any advice gratefully received.

Go to the credit card company, they will see who the money was paid to and arrange a recharge. You just need to provide evidence of the cancellation and your attempts to seek a resolution. It will probably be quicker as well

Thanks, I think that's the route I'll have to take
  • I think what they're saying is Expedia made the booking, but the payment went to BA - so only Expedia can tell BA to refund to you, but BA had the money.
Very complicated for what should be a simple process!
  • Have had an issue getting a refund for a flight booked through expedia for BA. The flight got cancelled but both are refusing to pay. Who could I complain to about expedia. Is there a governing body they are regulated by?

It's a very strange situation.  Usually when you book through an agent, the agent "own" the booking, so the airline won't deal with you, they'll only deal with the agent.  You've paid the agent so it's them that's liable.

The BA/Expedia thing muddies the waters.   It appears that somehow, Expedia enable BA to take the money direct from you, but BA still see it as an Expedia booking so won't deal with the passenger, even though the passenger paid BA directly.  To be honest i think Expedia should be doing more to sort it out.

You could just go to your card provider for a chargeback/Section 75.

    Hi ,
I had a couple of flights like this. On the first one I rang BA and they refunded, without mentioning Expedia. For the second flight on another date, they refused because it was Expedia. Expedia told me it was BA who had the money from the credit card , so I tried BA again and got a different agent who refunded without question. My advice would be to try ringing BA again without mentioning Expedia.
