GDPR infringement?

Hi. Question around GDPR. I took out a one year liability insurance policy in 2014 to enable me to do some freelance work for a client at the time. Thought nothing of if since but discovered a couple of weeks ago (6 years later) that the insurer has been taking a premium from my back account ever since (I only needed the insurance for one year). They have since quickly refunded me those six years of premiums (without me even having to ask). But my question is around the fact that they have never contacted me in those 6 years (hence I didn't even know they were taking money each year) - not one email, 21 day renewal notice, policy documents alert, nothing in the post, until, that is, I flagged this issue a few days ago, and then I have suddenly received a flood of emails - even their monthly newsletter for the very first time. So I think the have infringed Ombudsman and FSA rules around notifications, but wondered if the lack of any contact infringes GDPR regs as they have never asked me about how they use my data, what their breech policies are etc. Thoughts? Thanks. Danny

It sounds as though they had previously entered your email address wrongly, or not entered it at all, so you never received any emails until they corrected this just now? Many insurance policies renew by default but you should of course get prior notification of how much and an opportunity to cancel if it doesn't suit.
However, they have clearly acted swiftly as soon as you made them aware so I would forget it and move on. Also, it is a good reminder to keep a more careful check on your bank account in future!!3 -
My "thoughts" are that you should check your bank statements !
If you haven't noticed that you've been paying insurance premiums for 6 years, goodness knows what else you might have been paying for.11 -

Also, I doubt they've infringed any rules by the Food Standards Agency, being an insurer and all...
Although maybe their staff cafe wasn't observing food hygiene standards so who knows.1 -
A bit late I know, but I not sure if it's even a GDPR issue as that came into effect on May 18, which replaced the DPA0
