I've had bird nests in the loft which resulted in pecking noises in the room below.

    Hi there,
The timings on which you are hearing the tapping could suggest you have a bat roost. As a previous poster has said, bats they are a protected species across the UK, so no attempt to remove them should be made. To confirm presence of a bat roost it might be worth contacting your local bat group through the Bat Conservation Trust. They can advise on possible options for you. If is a bat roost, the roosts normally leaves by mid/end of September. I am a professional ecologist, feel free to PM if you need anything further.
  • Does your next door neighbour have a loft conversion?, you could be hearing noises from someones bedroom carrying through to your loft, the absence of furniture and carpeting etc can result in less absorption of mundane noises.   I am selling a house and a worried neighbour contacted us to say she thought that someone might be living in the house as they could hear someone walking around at night, she admitted that she thought it was a ghost, but it was sound carrying through from the house on the opposite side.

Here's my idea. A fan being used by the neighbour - during this hot weather. It could be fitted to the wall high up or maybe sitting on top of a wardrobe. I'm thinking of one of those that slowly rotates left and right and at some points, the blades contact something, say the protective grill and it makes that repetitive noise a few times, then ithe noise stops stops as it rotates back again. I'm sure I've come accross a fan that did that in the past. Or maybe at some point it blows against something that flaps and knocks against something. Or maybe a dehumidifier or air conditioner unit. I would be talkling to the neighbour about this - are they hard of hearing maybe?

Starlings? Proper pain in the backside and not allowed to kill em because they are allegedly rare (yeah right).
