Hello
My son has been a full-time 6th form student which I believe he is classed as until the end of this month. He had a mental health breakdown a few months back and has decided not to pursue university at this time.
He has started to work at a local pub for a while where he did the odd weekend shift. The hours are up and down since reopening.
He is on a fair bit of medication due to health issues from his childhood (bone marrow transplants and 5 year stay in hospital). This has also damaged his teeth, bones and eyes.
Do I set up a yearly nhs card or would he be eligible for help under the low income scheme? Would we enter our household income or just his? Also what income as it is so variable for him.
I would be grateful for any advice.
Thank you

Sounds like he would be eligible for the NHS low income scheme. https://www.nhs.uk/using-the-nhs/help-with-health-costs/nhs-low-income-scheme-lis/

Do you know how he will put his income as it varies? He is only on minimum wage so will be under the limit anyway.
Many thanks0 -
Were your sons bone marrow transplants for cancer treatment?
If they were, then he may well qualify for an NHS Medical Exemption Certificate if he is receiving treatment for the effects of previous cancer treatment .
To get an Exemption Certificate you fill in Form FP92A from your GP.1 -
No, not cancer treatment. He was born without an immune system. Unfortunately the treatment has taken it's toll on his skeleton, eyes, teeth.
It also left another part of his immune system deficient so is on various lifelong antibiotics.
He is happy, has a great work ethic so I am really proud.
I just don't want him to receive a fine after August so want to do things correctly as he will worry.
Thanks for replying.0 -
Just for info - https://www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/exemption-certificates/medical-exemption-certificates
I got one under epilepsy. You will need to attend your GP and fill in the form and they will send it off.
For NHS Exemption Card, it depends on yearly income. No need to attend GP.
