Cash an HMRC cheque?

Okay so bare with me. My partner got a cheque from HMRC for tax return, he cannot cash it into his bank account as he is minus £290. He lost his job in January of this year and then couldn't find another one because of coronavirus and lockdown and the bank just kept charging him overdraft fees even tho he explained to them that he had lost his job. still looking now but has had no luck as of yet, we are on a joint UC claim that goes into my account. So he can't deposit the cheque into my account because it has AC PAYEE ONLY on it. What can he do? Would opening a savings account and depositing it in there work? Appreciate the comments and help. Thanks

Try to open an account elsewhere, lodge the cheque, wait for it to clear then lift the cash. Circumstances may make it difficult to open an account though. Have a read here re the overdraft charges https://www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk/en/articles/how-to-reclaim-unfair-bank-charges0

If your partner cannot open a new account he could send the cheque back & ask for it to be reissued in another name, yours maybe or another trusted person to cash it & give him the money.0% credit card £1360 & 0% Car Loan £7500 ~ paid in full JAN 2020 = NOW DEBT FREE 🤗

The best idea is to open a new account with no relationship to current bank.0 -

Cheques can be returned to HMRC requesting a replacement to a nominee
