Help - British Gas default - money not owed!

Hi all,
Hope someone can provide some advice as I am currently having a major panic due to a default that has suddenly appeared on my credit file.
British gas claim that I owe them £130 from a property that I moved out of in 2011.
The default was not applied to my credit file until 2014 into 2015 (where 6 missed payments were shown, then defaults every month since)
Weirdly I applied for and was accepted for a mortgage in 2016 and it did not appear then.
I lived there with an ex partner and I moved out in 2011 and he remained there until 2012. I contacted BG at the time and advised I'd moved - although this was done by phone.
I spoke to them earlier today and they advised that the account was paid up to 2012 and listed as closed, although they still claim there is an outstanding balance.
They confirm that the balanced "owed" was for after I had moved out and if I could prove I had left the property, they would remove from my credit file.
As this was so long ago, the only documentation I had was the email from the deposit protection scheme confirming that I had a 6 month tenancy that had ended in September 2011 and that the deposit was returned to the agent (which was subsequently paid to me in cash)
British gas have advised that this is not enough evidence to remove the default from my file!
I don't have my notice email or anything of that nature as it was literally almost 10 years ago!
What do I do if they refuse to remove it as I am certain I don't owe this debt and I'm about to do a remortgage for home improvements and I'm terrified it's going to ruin my credit rating forever.
Any help or advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Gina

Were the bills/account with BG in your name or both names?
If either of the above then BG are correct and you are both responsible for the bills, much like the management of a joint bank account.0 -
In both names, but transferred to his name when I moved out.0

If the default was put on in 2014-15, ignore it. It's so old it'll have little to no effect on any borrowing and once it's been on there 6 years it'll automatically drop off due to being statute barred.
