    Periodically, I get scam calls from "the Warranty Department" telling me that the warranty on my washing machine runs out in 2 days, so I need to arrange and pay for a new one.

    Could your grandmother have received a similar call and assumed she was talking to the John Lewis warranty department (which is what the scammers hope), and have signed up for a new warranty?

    If so, she might still be believing that she has bought a new John Lewis warranty (or perhaps a warranty from the manufacturers).
