I admit I have never smelt the hand sanitizer never entered my head.    M&S one is a very thin liquid compared to those in other shops I do know.

No, I think you will find the one from these is lovely.  The point of it hanging around for ages is why I am asking.  Potato, tomato.

I agree with you. Personally I think it smells like one of those toilet disinfectant blocks and as you it takes a day or two before it disappears.

I decided to sniff it as I was sanitizing my hands in store today.  It just smelt like alcohol to me.
