Can I get a refund for an Open Ticket from Virgin Atlantic

Hello,
We should have been flying to Barbados on 18th July but, thanks to Covid 19, there was no way we could travel. In May we contacted Virgin Atlantic who offered us an 'Open Ticket' - there didnt seem to be any other options so we agreed to take the open ticket as we want to go to Barbados in 2021.
I have started looking at flights for 2021 and the price of the flight for Economy delight is coming out at the same price as a premium economy tickets cost us. There doesn't seem to be any premium economy seats (not sure if VA has reconfigured the planes to make all Economy) but i am 6ft 7 and need better legroom than Economy Delight.
I have messaged VA to see if they would refund me the cash I paid for the Original Ticket instead of leaving it open as I suspect, if PE seats are available at some point they are going to be astronmically expensive.
Has anyone else had experience of getting a refund on an open ticket?
Many Thanks

Historically an 'open ticket' was one which could be used on any date within its validity period, usually with unlimited changes, and nothing further to pay. One would just phone to make or change a reservation on that ticket number.

If this concept has been resurrected in its original form by VA, in the current circumstances, then you should have the possibility of a premium economy seat on any flight on that particular route (with availability) without additional payment. I've no idea if this is really the case but perhaps it's worth checking if you haven't already.

Have you looked at this on the airline's website?

Up to November this year the ticket is transferred over to same cabin same route so no extra to pay.  December onwards then there seems to be a fare difference to pay.
  • OP how many threads are you going to ask this on. I have counted three so far - why not ask Virgin?

    cos Virgin are utter useless......
I have open ticket,  which was LHR-MIA (e)  , then LAX-LHR (pe)   , although an airmile flight...
When i went through there awful text service a few weeks back to rebook for June 2021, there was a price increase of £19 each...  I was told the rate was due to higher taxes ?

I started the process last week of trying to book another airmile flight to carribean, sent the text as you do on Monday last week, i got a text last night from "kim" at 00:27  asking what flight i was interested in!
Ironically, i did decide to call Virgin about a flight on Weds last week, which took 1hr 14 mins for them to answer (fair enough, i guess most of there staff are on furlough still).  Most responses were "i would need to check with my manage who is un-available" for most of the questions i had....  oh well..
I am in the process of booking with TUI for a trip now instead...
As for re-doing my flights with Virgin for June next year, am sure it will be fun & games!
