O/S Daily Thursday 13 August 2020
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning
Morning everyone
Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
DH up and gone to work stupid stupid early, DS1 getting ready to go to work also, I'm enjoying my first cuppa, will then get a shower and my porridge, DS2 settled and happy.
Blustery cloudy start to the day, forecast is still for a hot day we'll see. Rain is forecast from tonight.
Dinner last night was egg, bacon, sausage, beans and mushrroms. Not sure what we'll be having tonight, will organise today. I have a "to do" list.
Keep safe and well x

Good morning everyone
It is far too hot to sleep so I have made a head start on making a meal plan for next week and ordering a shop from Tesco. I was promised rain ...stamps foot and sulks..... we had a spectacular lightning storm in the early hours but no thunder or rain and I am melting.
Steve is still desperate for an apple and blackberry pie so I will make the pastry in a minute before the kitchen turns into a sauna. We are also supposed to have a turkey casserole for dinner but I don't know if I can bear having the oven on for that long. We ended up having a takeaway last night as neither of us wanted to cook.
My mum, sister and niece came to visit me yesterday. It was so lovely to see them especially my niece. She has shot up this Summer and is taller than her mum now and she is still only 12. She was very excited to see the bits of the dragon I'm knitting for her but I haven't done any more to it as it is too warm to knit comfortably.
Jemima has asked me to look after the kids today and then my grandson asked me if he could make a card today for his mum and stepdad's wedding anniversary. Of course I will help him but it's still a bit awkward as they are separated at the moment. My grandchildren have both had a bug a couple of days ago so there will be no cwtches today and plenty of hand washing.
Right, I am off to make pastry! Hope you all have a great day whatever you are up to, take care xx

Morning All
Gosh it was hot yesterday, 28 degrees when I left work at 4pm. My office turns into a sauna around 2pm, it was unbearable. I had a shower when I got home and sat out for a bit, couldn't do anything else for a while.
As the sun was shining I took down the blinds from the living room and gave them a scrub outside, had a bit of a struggle getting them back up as the chains had slipped round the mechanism but they are up and working and all the squashed flies have gone! I had to have another shower before I went to bed!
More madness at work today I would imagine, proof that the parents don't read anything - one child came in yesterday when he shouldn't have been in until today. The worrying thing is that the teacher didn't notice either!
My thoughts are with those involved in the train derailment, such a tragedy.
Take care and enjoy today. XX

Morning,
Still very hot even though we did get a thunderstorm last night. We have what I call watery sunshine . Thunder due again around lunchtime.
OH day off and he is presently in the supermarket doing our weekly shop.
Plans for today - Have a Tree surgeon coming to give another opinion on a tree stump which is by the house - whether to remove or leave - as we have clay soil.
If it is not to hot I would like to vacuum upstairs

Morning
Another poor nights sleep last night and it seems the planned thunderstorms that have been on the forecast all week disappeared and its now reporting another day of back to back sun. Now I love sun I really do but the lack of sleep just makes me dream of snowI know I should be careful what I wish for. Anyway the spa is obvs open for anyone needing a dip in the pool and an insomniacs special cocktail
Yesterday is been recorded as one of those days you wish you hadn't bothered to get up at all. Mum rang first thing to let me know her telly was "broken" and what was I going to do (that's the point sensible people would have gone back to bed) anyway it wasn't broken freeview had changed the signal and it simply needed retuning. Tried to explain the process (2 button presses) but she was hysterical again so that was a waste of time. Anyway then followed 2 hrs on the phone to freeview who sorted out an engineer appointment for today for her. Went back to her and she told me she couldn't wait a day so her neighbour would do it. Bear in mind her area is in lockdown again atm Would the jury let me off matricide do you think? Another 2 hrs on hold to freeview to cancel the appointment
So as a nice little top off to the day I heated up some chilli with cheese on top then proceeded to drop the bowl over my legs and carpet. Result burns and a cut from the bowl oh and a huge chilli stain on the carpet
Lets face it today can only get better!
Hope your days are better than mine

Morning folks and thanks NMLC. It was supposed to be slightly cooler today the wm said. It doesn't feel it yet I'm sorry to say. And for the 3rd night running we were told to expect rain and thunderstorms last night. Unless I had fallen into a coma I didn't hear them! The tubs and pots are crying out to be watered.
I don't know what is going on next door. Scaffolding went up all round yesterday. My biggest fear is they are having the rendering knocked off. I remember the noise when old chap had it replaced years ago. Maybe they are just having it painted, says she hopefully. If it's the former I can't be stuck here listening to it all day long, I would be suicidal. If we are lucky and the local restrictions are lifted at last I would at least be able to escape somewhere for the day.
I promised myself I would get the little bus into town this morning, in view of the promised cooler temps. As it still feels as hot it's not as appealing thinking about sitting on a bus and trailing round the shops in a mask. Will see what it feels like outdoors when I go out to feed the birdies.
Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) for all in need of them. Take care and stay safe x
I posted this at 7.18. At 7.25 the noise started - the rendering is coming off. Poor Sparkle is running around like a demented cat. Loud noises frighten her. Can you get ear defenders for cats I wonder."If you dream alone it will remain just a dream. But if we all dream together it will become reality"13 -
Good morning folks. No thunderstorms here though the east coast has taken a real battering, one consequence was the deaths on the railway. Such a tragedy. As predicted yesterday the boiler engineer arrived very late. The service took half an hour, nothing wrong but I've agreed to have the hoses changed as they are 'crunchy' which makes the water run cold sometimes. More expense!Late on in the afternoon I had a dental problem. It has been brewing for a while with sensitivity to hot and cold though the biting trauma (technical term) shot me out of my seat. I left a message on the dentists triage phone, he called back and has given me a precious appointment for Friday. I feel that it'll mean either a root canal treatment or a crown coming on. He'll also look at my broken front tooth. This morning the cleaner is coming so I'll get myself out of the house. I've an order to collect from Marks. I'll also pick up a couple of the little tarts from the Italian cafe as DM really enjoys them.Sounds like some tough times here, I hope that things get easier for everyone. I'm sprinkling hug dust around, especially on TA.
Now it's time to gear up. Happy Thursday to all.10 -
Morning all
Little cooler at the moment but i don't think that its going to last I may wash the floors today but its not a given .
Nels I really hope today is a better day for you as for Matricide with all of us on the jury i am sure you would be found not guilty and ordered to take a 3 month cruise in the caribbean as penance
TA not good poor little sparkle i don't fancy trying to put ear defenders on her though I fear there would only be 1 winner and it wouldn't be you
Gers ouch good luck at the dentist tomorrow
Dumpling enjoy the children its good that you can see them again makes such a difference
Right onwards n upwards I need to get motivated
Have a great day whatever you are up to stay cool and drink plenty xSlava Ukraini12 -
Good morning and thank you for starting the thread nmlc.
The promised storm finally reached us yesterday evening and we had hours of heavy rain - fortunately it rained for long enough to soak the ground rather than just r unine off the hard-packed earth. Everything feels fresher today and I have washed towels, they are on the line but there might be more showers in store so if need be, they can omelette inside. I actually thought I'd typed come inside, I'm leaving omelette there as an indication of what autogetitwrong resorts to.
Today I have no plans other than putting away yesterday's washing and unbung the bathroom drain, hopefully my plunger will do it, otherwise it will be nasty unbunging stuff. Might go for a walk I didn't yesterday as it was so boiling hot.
Nelski, poor you, your mum can be a bit unreasonable, can't she, and then the chili accident. Hope the carpet is cleanable.
Dumpling, I agree about the knitting, I finished a baby jumper yesterday but I just couldn't face sewing it up, anyway the baby is not born yet so not crucial.
TA that's a pain about the rendering, poor you and Sparkle.
Right, I'm off to wield my plunger so I'll wish you all a good day.
I was jumping to conclusions and one of them jumped back11 -
Nelski, I hope today is better for you and cooler. TA, oh no I hope Sparkle manages to get used to it.
I slept better last night thankfully, the night before was a very restless one. This house gets so hot, it's nice in winter but in summer it's difficult to cope. We went down to Laura's yesterday to water her garden (such as it is) and their Edwardian house is very much cooler.
The meal we had on Tuesday was lovely though the service was slow. The couple on the table nearest to us complained but we weren't as bad as them. The hot weather had brought lots of people to the pub garden and the staff struggled to cope. We were inside and well socially distanced thankfully.
better go, I have a hair appointment in less than an hour. I shall get her to cut it shorter today.10 -
Morning all.
Still hot and clammy. We must have had some rain in the night because there are damp patches on the ground, but far from the promised storms.
dumpling, tricky problem with your grandson and the wedding anniversary cards. Could he not make them one each, wishing them A Happy Day. Honour would be satisfied.
Camelot, yes it's not always just the parents, is it. My most famous blooper was when we took a party of 10 year-olds to the Theatre in London. After the performance we gathered them up, counted heads and set off for Waterloo Station. We counted heads again. Still the right number. We were just about to usher them on to the train when someone spotted a stranger in our midst. A child from another school had attached herself to our party which meant that we had left one of ours behind at the Theatre. This was in the days before mobile phones, Eventually it got sorted and we returned to school only a couple of hours later than planned. No wonder my hair turned grey early.
I'm not planning too much today so make pop back later.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY (cover your eyes Nelski)
Some people just need a high five.
In the face.
With a chair.I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.11
