Employers contributions for furloughed workers from 1 August

In the case of zero contract hours PAYE employees who have been furloughed since April ( I believe the minimum required period is 3 consecutive weeks between March 1 and June 30), do employers have to pay the required NIC / and relevant salary contributions from August 1 until the scheme closes? Or can they choose to discontinue furloughing these workers, by not making these payments, if they argue that it would cost them too much money, due to decreased income?

The employer can choose to stop furloughing workers
  • Two questions:
Do they need to make the workers redundant if they stop furloughing them?
Won't this mean that there will be millions of workers whose furlough payments stop at the end of July? As employers will wish to save money
  • I think the government overstretched themselves on furlough, that's why they have not reimbursed my company as they promised.
Expect around 50-60% of people to be made redundant.

For workers on zero hours contracts, with no sort of guaranteed minimum, it may well mean that employers take them off furlough. I don't know if it will be millions though.

If there's no work for the employees to undertake. Then the business isn't going to generate the sales and make the profit to cover the employees payroll costs. Employers cannot spend money they haven't got.  Not a question of saving money. Saving money is what people more generally need to learn to do after learning from this current experience.
