You don't need to take off a gearbox to determine its failed. Ill leave it at that.
I'm guessing you're not an apprentice trained, time served mechanic given that comment. Just because you can't get it in gear or there's a noise doesn't automatically mean the gearbox has failed. As AdrianC pointed out, the only time you can be 100% certain it wasn't something else causing the problem is if there's a lump missing out of the side of it.

That's not quite how I'd put it... I've seen gearbox casings with lumps missing that have not been caused by internal factors, but very definitely by external...

If you have your car serviced at the main dealer they will always pay for all subsequent repairs. It's called goodwill.
    That is obviously untrue.
Oh no I have read it on this forum many times. Take your car to the main dealer for servicing and you will get goodwill.

Goodwill does not extend to just fixing everything for free.

Yeah, obviously the OP's local dealer is just going to buy him a new gearbox and pay for their mechanic to fit it, out of the goodness of their heart.

    No you haven't.

What you have read is that there are occasions when something fails and it is just out of warranty.  Sometimes, manufacturers MAY contribute as a goodwill gesture because their customer has had their routine servicing through the main dealer network.
I myself have benefitted from this, with an issue.  All injectors changed and Mercedes were tireless in trying to find the fault - didn't end up being the injectors.  So yes, it can benefit some, but no one has said it always does.
  • did I mention they were race track miles?

So assuming you're not a troll you'll get nowhere if it was.

I thought if you had main dealer servicing you would be OK even if they were race track miles. Surely a little race track wouldn't erase all the goodwill.
