Booking a Driving Test after failing

My son was about to take his practical driving test in March this year. It was cancelled 3 times in the month leading up to the lockdown. He had been checking the website and booked a test when it was up and running a few weeks ago. After all that, he failed  :( . He wants to take it again as soon as possible, and his instructor supports him, says he is definitely ready and should retake it. Looking on the website he has to wait a minimum of 10 days. So he tried to rebook for after that date, but the website is saying they are not taking bookings for 'retakes'.

Has anyone heard how long that rule is likely to stay in place for?

Also, he is a key worker (started work at the local hospital on the first day of lockdown!) so he possibly has the option to apply for the keyworker test, but as that could be allocated at very short notice, and it's not likely to be possible to get annual leave at such short notice(depending on how short it is).

Has anyone had experience of booking via the 'keyworker test' service, how short notice are they? Ar they usually at the local testing center? Is it possible to decline/cancel a keyworker test if the date that is offered is not a date he can get off from work?

He's really hoping to retake as soon as possible, as to keep paying for a lesson a week to keep his skills up, it going to eat into the wages he is saving for his car.

The simple answer is that nobody knows. Nothing like the situation we've had for the last 5 months has ever happened so everyone is winging it.

Absolutely, i agree its unprecedented. I think I perhaps didnt word my questions very well. It was not really asking for peoples predictions, it was more about if anyone had seen if there was a statement about a date from which they will be accepting retests, or if anyone has been through the keyworker route for testing.

If he really needs a licence because he's a key worker, then his employer should be keen to accommodate a short-notice test.
