Paypal Negative balance, debt collector

I recently sold a jacket online for £150, the post i made was completely honest about the quality of the jacket and what condition (it still had value regardless of its condition as it was a very rare designer piece) he recieved the product and the money cleared, i moved it into my bank and closed my paypal as i no longer needed it. later i recieve an email claiming that he refunded it and ofc because i had no account i couldnt argue, the buyer blocked me on all platforms and paypal says i cant get the product back but i need to give them the money? im told apparently debt collectors will be in touch, what should i do, they have my address and phone number.

Who refunded it? You have the money - the buyer has the jacket. Do you mean the buyer claims to have returned the jacket? (For what reason?) Was an issue raised through the online buying platform? Do they have any proof that they returned it?later i recieve an email claiming that he refunded it and ofc because i had no account i couldnt argue, the buyer blocked me on all platforms and paypal says i cant get the product back but i need to give them the money?
Are you saying that you closed your PayPal account immediately and then ignored any e-mails from them about the return/claim? That (along with selling designer goods) could make PayPal think you are a dodgy character and thus refund the buyer.I need to think of something new here...0 -
the guy bought the jacket, didnt say anything once he recieved it, maybe a few days later i delete the account, he then refunds and paypal fail to contact me, therefore case is in his favour. then after tell me i have to resolve my negative balance. the consumer has the jacket he bought and i have the money he paid for it.NBLondon said:maxmara20 said:

I still don’t understand the “he refunds” bit. He can’t issue himself a refund. If he’s paid and received a refund, he must of opened some sort of case.0

You cannot have closed your PayPal account as it has to remain open for 180days minimum from the last transaction, so your account is still there even if you deleted the app (I’m trying to work out what you actually mean here).maxmara20 said:

if your PayPal account has a negative balance then PayPal will sell that debt to a debt collector and chase you for it. They have never to my knowledge gone to court yet, but will probably phone and write to you, possibly, but unlikely, turn up to your address. If you ignore them then obviously neither you nor anyone connected with you can ever risk opening a PayPal account in the future as any funds related to you will be taken against this debt.
As above though, selling a high end garment and then just cancelling the app and ignoring emails from PayPal will almost certainly have marked you as a scammer.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Theres something that doesn't quite make sense here - and when something doesn't make sense its usually because its not the complete truth.
You sold a garment for £150. Once the buyer paid you immediately closed your PayPal account? If this was possible (taking into account the 180 day wait time mentioned above), then closing the account straight after sending the item sounds like something dodgy to me. Sounds as though you sent a dodgy item, receive the money, withdrew it, and thought you could get around not refunding by closing the account, thinking the buyer would not be able to request any refund since the account didn't exist....... Not saying thats what you intended to do, but see how it comes across as 'dodgy'?.......

You can close your paypal at any time unless there is a 21-day hold, an open case or a negative balance.
Obviously the details of the transactions still remain on paypal's database.
As the account is closed you won't be informed of any new claims, and as you can't respond to them, they automatically go in the buyer's favour.
When I closed a paypal then subsequently got an INR, ebay refunded the buyer and charged me the amount as ebay fees. Which ended up with the same result as if I had refunded the buyer from paypal. Didn't get a defect.
But I got a defect for late delivery on a different item despite the tracking showing early delivery.
