Joint mortgage and tax credits (not a couple)

Options
I'm looking at purchasing a home with my brother. I currently receive tax credit only due to being a single parent and working full time.
No housing benefit or council tax support currently claimed as I currently have a mortgage (shared ownership)

He will be on the council tax bill, as would be classed as his address (he works away, so not 'home' often)

I am trying to find information on whether this will mean my tax credits stop.
We wont have shared bank acct, or shared income etc

He is your brother and his earnings will not affect the amount of tax credits you're entitled to.

Having a mortgage doesn’t prevent you claiming Council Tax Support.

  • I assumed I wouldn't be able to claim it. I get the single occupancy discount.

Single person discount is not the same as council tax reduction. If it's classed as his main home then you won't be able to claim the single person discount.

It’s means tested. Once your brother is on the bill you will be considered responsible for half the bill (without the single person discount, as poppy says). If you are on a low income you may be eligible for CTS Depending on your savings too. Different local authorities have different criteria.
