Hi,
I'd like to commission some building work on my home, the building company looks very reputable however i'm nervous given the current climate that they may go bust before the work is complete and i'll loose my money. Therefore I wanted to pay a portion of the cost using my credit card so i'd have some sort of protection, the builder has said they want to be paid by bank transfer, if I transfer money from my credit card will I still get the same level of protection from my credit card company? (Tesco Bank).
Thank you in advance.

No you won't. The item/work has to be paid for directly.

A money transfer breaks the debtor-creditor-supplier chain so will not give you S75 cover in this instance. You would need to pay the merchant directly by CC in order to get protection here, but if they don't accept them then it's a bit of a moot point - they are under no obligation to do so. If you're that worried about something going wrong, which is understandable but probably less likely than you think, then you could wait until current events calm down some more before proceeding with any work.

Strictly speaking it doesn't all have to be paid on a credit card, as long as part of it (at least 1p) is paid on a credit card, and the total paid (by any means) is less than £30K, S75 protection is available.1

Very important that last sentence - the whole of the work including all materials, labour, VAT etc has to be no more than £30,000. (No part payments for parts of the work).0
