Advice re cancelling vs not turning up (due to FCO warning)

Supposed to be going to Mallorca on Saturday. FCO warning means that we are not going to go. Bank travel insurance will cover unrecoverable costs because of FCO warning. But they have told me not to cancel anything as otherwise the liability falls on us. We have a villa booked through homeaway, deposit paid, balance due tomorrow. If I don't pay the balance but also don't cancel, that is going to (understandably) make the owner very upset. I don't know how how to handle it at all. I'm going to phone the insurance company again tomorrow as their advice was a little confusing but I wondered if anyone else had come across this situation?

I've had a look at it and it says don't cancel but doesn't really have any advice for our particular situation. It is indeed tricky.

I would contact owner and request he returns your deposit.
Good luck with your travel insurance. I had a similar scenario. After wasting my time filling in forms and sending supporting documentation, NW insurance rejected my claim.

They have already said the deposit is non-refundable unfortunately.
Phoned insurance company again and was told a different story from last week - they have said I am now ok to cancel due to FCO warning and I am covered. I made sure it was put in the notes of the call so hopefully they won't try and wriggle out of it.
