Capital one refund

Good afternoon,

I had a letter from Capital one stating I was due a refund from a credit card that I had in 2010 (ish). Has anyone else received a letter like this before? It states I’ll receive a cheque within 28 days. I received the letter three weeks ago (mid July 2020)
Thanks in advance.

craig.

    What’s the question about it?
  • Is it a genuine letter, if so has anyone else received a letter like this recently?
  • Or are there scam letters like this circulating at the moment?

What did Cap1 say when you called and asked?

I’m a tad dubious about calling, I know it sounds daft, but you hear so much about scams and such. But paranoid I know which is why I’m asking the question on here.

If you're worried about it being a scam, get the phone number off their official website.

What scam can it be where they send you a cheque and aren't asking you to do anything?
FWIW there's a lot of lenders automatically giving refunds of interest automatically based on FOS/FSA rulings on cases so do it to pre-empt the likelihood of any compo claims. It's also been the case that when the auditors have done auditing they've discovered that people had been accidentally overcharged interest on a product so again actively refund along with statutory interest.

I had a cheque from Capital One in relation to a closed credit card a few weeks ago. They didn't send a letter in advance though, just sent the cheque and a covering letter at the same time. If you have had a refund onto a closed account that's the best way they can deal with it. Give it another week - and then contact them using the number found on their website to ask where is it. You might have gotten a standard timeframe letter - but they might be a bit slow if they're still running on low staff levels. (Do you still have a capital one account - even if it's a different card? If so you can send them a secure message through a web browser to confirm validity of the letter).
