Hi all,
I've bought a QNAP TS-131P to replace my ageing Seagate Central, but can anyone recommend a cheap, good hard drive to add in? Assuming I don't need all the features of a WD Red given it's a 1 bay NAS? I'm looking at 3-4TB.
Thanks in advance!

Er, personally reliability on storage is in my eyes the first and foremost consideration, rather than price.
I would look at Backblaze and their longevity tests, and think about purchasing one of the drives that tested good. Off my head HGST have mostly been good drives, but now bought by Western digital.

The WD Blue range would appear to be the next step down from the Red, and has better reviews on Scan.co.uk than the equivalent Seagate and Toshiba drives.
If the data you are backing up is already stored in the cloud, say on Dropbox, you can be less concerned about reliability. If the data is only stored on the NAS and is in any way important to you, you should think about spending more money on the drive. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.0 -
Yep, sorry, let me confirm the important stuff is backed up from the NAS to Google Drive cloud storage (paid option). This would be the local copy for fast access, and media files.
Suggestions welcome! Thanks!0 -

Now? They've owned them since 2012! For regulatory reasons Western Digital couldn't dump the HGST/Hitachi brand, they had to run them separately. Now that's all been scrapped, so has the HGST name. They're all now Western Digital.
