Mortgage broker

Is this the norm?
Mortgage broker 1: Was keen for me to apply for The maximum mortgage allowance for my salary and then top up with my deposit. Ignored that I requested 24 yrs not 20 and that I only wanted a mortgage of £181000.
Mortgage broker 2: Pleasant to deal with So choose him and sent all my details. He said he would apply for a mortgage in principle and get back to me in a few days. I had to ask what mortgages he was looking at for me and the interest rates seemed to be higher than expected. My preference is to have that mortgage in principle and know the interest rate. I contact him as I’ve heard nothing for five days to be told he is on annual leave.

Is this the norm?

In my (limited) experience, no. Both brokers I spoke to took my needs into account regarding length and amount. Getting an AIP/DIP was very fast and I was advised of the interest rate. I think mine is on annual leave at the moment, but it's through a company so I've just heard from one of her colleagues instead.

With our broker we sent over our details (income, deposit etc) and she sent me over some illustrations of mortgage rates available depending on how much we put down, term etc. We then applied for MIP. But we didn’t know/couldn’t get a firm answer on the interest rate until we actually applied for the mortgage only an illustration. I was told this was because the “products” available change daily. The rate we did get was similar to the illustrations - we got 1.8% and was quoted 1.75-1.9%.
I spoke with several brokers before going with the one I did go with. I felt some were too flaky with information and didn’t listen to me. Go with your gut feeling and also recommendations from friends/family/neighbours if you can. Good luck!
  • Definitely not. Our broker is unbelievable. I was recommended her by friends
  • Thanks everyone. I would be happy to have recommendations as the 2 I contacted were recommendations. Interestingly my broker told me to start looking for property even without a MIP.
