If the account is only in her name you may not have access to it until various legal matters are sorted out. I would contact CA and ask the to make future payments to your account.MikeJO said:Also (sorry) my CA is paid into my wife's bank account, can I leave that open or am I legally bound to close it?Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.1 -
Thanks but to complicate matters all our diect debits and rent standing order come from her account. The UC comes into my account and tops up the money in hers to cover the outgoings so switching the CA to my account would be a sticky plaster on a much bigger problem. There is no way at all I can address all these issues tomorrow before my hospital appointment and what happens after that, in terms of my treatment, is a complete unknown. I can't close her account (especially, potentially, from an ITU bed) as I don't have any death certificate yet and if there's no money in there or it's frozen none of my utilities/rent will be paid. I have nobody who can take over the role for me either.calcotti said:

It may be that I'm told my surgery isn't for three weeks in which case I could theoretically get it all done but I'll be told to isolate immediately so visiting banks shouldn't happen. She also has a credit card with a small amount owing on it, around £50, am I allowed to pay that off with funds from either her account or mine?“Procrastination is my middle name....well it would be if I could be ar**d to contact Deed Poll."0 -
You mentioned having five children, are any of them able to help you with some of these things with you being in hospital?0

Sadly unlikely, the eldest four are actually step children (though we've never used the step word) but none are equipped emotionally to cope with the situation. The only possibility is our son with the support of my brother, but I'd need to take the two of them through everything in great detail and to be honest given my mental state in the last week or so financial considerations have rarely been in my thoughts. I know it's something that needs fairly urgent attention, hence the posts here, but there are much more important things I have to do first on a personal level, and if I break a few rules I'm sure (or at least I hope) the powers that be will be understanding.KatrinaWaves said:You mentioned having five children, are any of them able to help you with some of these things with you being in hospital?“Procrastination is my middle name....well it would be if I could be ar**d to contact Deed Poll."0 -
I am so sorry for your loss, it sounds as if it has come at the worst possible time for you too
I can't offer any advice but didn't want to 'read and run' without offering my condolences and good wishes for your own recovery. It's not difficult!
