I moved to live in the UAE for five years.

My UK bank had no problem with me keeping my current account and I regularly transferred back chunks of savings, including a significant final settlement when I moved home. None of these triggered any form of investigation.

OK I think the post is  a bit misleading.  Barclays are not making you homeless. There has obviously been some issue with getting the money back from the account under review but if you live abroad surely you have savings in an accessible account over there? I am not sure what the reason behind getting you to travel back to the UK is but it is a salutary lesson that if you live abroad you should keep your savings accessible over in the country of residence not elsewhere.  I understand keeping a UK account is sensible if you travel to and fro and keeping an amount in there is ok but keeping your whole savings there when you live thousands of miles away from a branch which can identify you if there is a problem seems crazy. Having said that waiting 17 working days for the money to be transferred when it is promised in 10 is not ok.  The issue about your wife being pregnant and your cat and having to leave Dubai is due to your wife losing her job though not Barclays.  Don't you work in Dubai?  Why do you have to move back?
