Gym/pool membership early cancellation dispute

Hi,
I e-mailed my Health Club on 13/07 to notify them of my membership cancellation with immediate effect, at no extra charge after finding out they were reopening on 25th July.
I explained I didn’t feel safe to go back yet despite the government measures in place due to the high infection rate in the area (a local newspaper had published an article the day before saying the town where I live was on the Coronavirus high risk outbreak list...) and that I would take up a new membership when I would feel safe/ready to do so.
I also advised them I would be cancelling my direct debit.
They left a message today advising me of my outstanding payment for August due to the 30 day notice in place.
I don’t feel it is right I should pay as I don’t want to take any unnecessary risks at the moment and surely the 30 day notice should not apply in such circumstances. Furthermore I didn’t get a refund on the rest of the month when Gyms closed on 20th March.
Can you please kindly advise?
Many thanks.

By talking by being nice - polite and concise you can often get a good outcome.0
