How do I get smart meters?
We moved into a house not long ago and it has old pre pay gas and electricity meters with the cards and keys.
I want new meters and to pay our bills by direct debit.
Can I contact any supplier and request them to install them? Or does it have to be my current (British gas).
If I can go to any provider any tips on who's the cheapest?
TIA

You should have registered immediately with the existing supplier and obtained new cards, otherwise you might be paying off someone's debt. This thread shows the problems that might result. You don't have to have smart meters, although the larger companies may try to force them on you.Start by comparing by using the Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?' sites, and don't forget to see whether separate suppliers are cheaper. You'll have to guess your annual usage initially.1

Only your current supplier can arrange to change your meters, so I'd start by talking to BG and tell then you want to switch from Pre-Pay to a credit account.BG will usually do a credit check and then let you know if you are approved for the change, if so then they will fit smart meters as nobody is going to replace an old-style pre-pay meter with anything else these days.If BG deny your request to switch to a credit account then you will need to switch elsewhere. You will not have to pay for the meter change whoever you are with.

Thanks Gerry I did register with them straight away just wasn't bothered about direct debit straight away. 6 months of running to the shop every couple weeks because the electricity is about to run out has changed my mind0
