Court fine (Unknown speeding offence)

Hi all.

I have just received a letter from HMCTS detailing a fine of £816. I have called them and it relates to a speeding fine that went unanswered. For clarity, this went to my old address and I was completely unaware of it. This however is my fault as I hadn’t updated my driving licence details.

The fine is massive and will ruin me for a little while. I’m not sure there is much that can be done, however a friend suggested I posted here to see if anyone had any advice.

Thank you for any help.

We don't normally advise on non private tickets , pepipoo fightback forums is the place to ask , with copies of all paperwork

Use a non Hotmail email address for signing up there

Your friend should have mentioned that this forum deals with private PCN,s

NB , both your driving licence and your V5C need updating or else the DVLA can fine you up to £1000 for each offence , as well

This is why people should update their details asap , it's a legal requirement , plus avoids issues like yours from escalating

Its not your licence that was key there, but where your car was registered.
Are you sure its for speeding? £816 is much more likely due to a failure to furnish charge, because the NIP/S172 went to your old address, noone answered, and so the (Registered) Keeper - you - was summonsed for failure to furnish, and convicted when you did not respond. This usually carries a £500 fine, plus costs ,and 6 points.
Check your licence on the DVLA. It should show 6 points.
I fail to see how, if you indeed did not update your V5c, you are going to get out of this one.

You can ask the question on Pepipoo, but you'll get the same answer as here - you messed up, and are now deep in the doo doo.

The only worthwhile advice, is to pay this asap, before you get bailiffs at the door and even more costs.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.

You might be able to arrange a payment plan with the courts, butyou must act very very quickly.
