STUDENT BANK ACCOUNT

I am now in my third year of studying but in my second year I tried to apply for a student bank account and all the banks said I couldn't apply for one.
My own bank who i have been with for years didn't even change my current account to student account even though I informed them of my change in circumstances of becoming a student!
Is this right?

If they didn't want to offer you a student bank account they are not obligated to.
Your own bank wouldn't have just changed your account to a student one. You should have applied for one if thats what you wanted.

I see from your previous post you have had debt? Any CCJs? That'll be why the banks don't want your business

I'm not sure that's true, it depends on the policy of the individual bank. In my particular case my Natwest Solo card account (this is back in 2008...!) became my Student account, and that same account is now a Reward account. It's the only one I've memorised the sort code and account number of.

But you're right, the OP isn't entitled to a student account because they're a student.

Thanks for your reply. However as hard as it is to decipher over a screen please don’t assume and get funny with me. I have NOT had ccjs

It was a genuine question seeing as you are receiving debt letters, have you actually checked your credit file? Its a regular occurrence on the these boards that people come for help for.

Oh and you dont need CCJs to be refused credit and/or accounts, defaults on accounts will do it.

Indeed every bank has a risk profile for all customers with current accounts.
Most will work from 1-9 - 1 being the very best credit profile to 9 being the worst.
If you are say 6 or higher they won't offer you a student account and certainly won't offer you any free overdrafts.
Others have asked you to check the credit reference agencies - when you have done this come back for more help going forward.

It might sound quite hard to believe but when I went to do my MA, Barclays switched over my bog standard current account to a student account and gave me a £500 overdraft with no credit check. Obviously I did have to request it and show proof but once I did they just clicked a few buttons and that was it. Overdraft is now at 1k and no credit check. I’ve banked with them for just under 20 years but it seems it’s a fairly standard thing for them to do (I think you have to have had your current account with them for a certain amount of time before though)
I might add my credit rating isn’t the greatest (although most of this to be fair wasn’t any fault of my own- it’s the last of the trailing defaulted accounts that were written off around 2014 when I was ill with cancer)
