Smart Meter Woes

Hi All
Background
Originally on pay as you go with boost. This was with a key then it became and app and I could top up via the app.
I then saw Martins money program about 1 year or more ago. And he spoke to someone on the show and I believe in order to get off keys/pay as you go energy you have to switch to one of the big 6 (British Gas, EDF etc). Then switch you account from a pay as you go account to a direct debit payment account. Then have smart meters installed. Then search on eg uswitch for best energy deals like bulb or other cheaper deals.
So I switched to EDF. It took some time they messed up the gas account and for 2 months I had no gas bill then it got fixed and had to pay 2 months!
So as of now I have an EDF dual fuel electric and gas bill but no smart meter
On the website it keeps saying "Sorry, we’re unable to offer you a smart meter appointment at the moment. This may be due to installer availability or your meter type".
Can anyone advise where I go from here?

Just forget all about smart meters which offer no benefit and can even stop you switching to some tariffs.  Send meter readings every month and you'll be fine.
See whether you can get a better deal from separate suppliers; start with Citizens Advice and 'Switch with Which?'.
