Switching current accounts within the same bank?

Options
If you have two current accounts with the same bank, e.g. Santander and want to transfer/switch one into the other can this be done using the current account switch service?

My understanding is that it isn't possible using CASS - most threads I've seen asking this question seem to end with the bank saying they can;t do it.

    No and yes.

You can't use CASS to switch internally (although some will argue that Virgin Money used to offer it, when merging two banks, which is a completely exceptional case and not really an internal switch).

    What you can do is
    1. use CASS to switch your account from bank A to bank B
    2. when that switch is complete, use CASS to switch from bank B to bank A
The only advantages in using CASS for this are, IMO, the redirection of any future incoming payments, and the swift closure of your redundant account at bank A. Otherwise it will be much faster to just move any SOs and any money yourself, inform any DD recipients of your new sort code and account number, and to ask the bank to close the redundant account.

    Thanks both.

I wonder if this is also the problem of switching a BOS to a Halifax current account, they are effectively the same bank?

Maybe. But the incentives are designed to bring customers in. it's more likely they'd rather give actual new customers £100, rather than give it to existing customers just moving their accounts around.

well, yes they are the same banking group but.... BOS accounts have a  branch based in Scotland and they do have a dedicated telephone number- not the same as Halifax. The branding is different as well.
If you are hoping to get the £100 incentive have you scoured the t & cs?
If this is what you want and why... why not ask them? and take note of the person's name if the answer is 'Yes!'

I can't take advantage because I had a good switch deal- last year?

I've just remembered when I opened my original Reward a/c years ago I switched from Intelligent Finance  (which is Halifax) and got a small switch bonus.
