If a Universal assessment period is from 6th to 5rh and you then receive a tax refund on 16rh would this be taken into account for that assessment period and therefore reduce the payment to zero or would it be in the next assesment period?

It affects your UC in the month it's received. Whether it reduces your UC to zero will depend on the amount of refund and what your maximum UC entitlement is.
  • So do HMRC inform DWP of the date they made the payment?

You need to report the refund through your journal.
It will be treated as earnings so a 63% deduction from the UC payable will be made (subject to any disregard due a work allowance if applicable).
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

Which was the exact same advice you gave in the persons other thread, asking a similar question. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6161432/tax-refund-saffecting-universal-credit-payments#latest
