A sports center used to send emails to advise of spaces being available on classes and I had some simple code to access these emails and book the classes.  They've changed the mechansim to advise of spaces to "Mobile app push notifications".   2 questions for anybody who knows about these. 1. for the particular app the notifications only appear to come up when screen is on.  is that how they work for all apps?  2. are there any apps there which have access to notification data?

You should get the notification sound unless it's turned off in the settings......What is the app called and what phone do you have.

Check in the app 'Notification' settings and make sure that they have a tone assigned and it is active......Go to phone settings....Apps....Find the app and make sure notifications are allowed.

On your phones settings there should be something called Notifications. In there find the app in question and check the notification settings for it. You can activate settings in there to show notifications on your phones lock screen, notification centre and banners etc... You can enable sounds for the alert as well.
For example i have notifications enabled for Whatsapp with the lock screen enabled so even if my phone is locked i can see the notification without having to unlock the phone. If i didn't have lock screen enabled i would have to unlock my phone.
