O/S Daily Wednesday 5 August 2020
This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or SLOW internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred. When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning
Morning everyone
Hugs to those that want/need them, those who are poorly and those who are looking after a poorly person x
Happy birthday to those with a birthday x
DH up and gone to work stupid stupid early, DS1 getting ready for work, I'm showered, dressed and enjoying first cuppa and my porridge whilst on here. DS2 settled and happy.
Light cloud to start the day here and blustery but feels like the air is getting warmer.
Dinner last night was beef stew and dumplings, mash, carrots and broc. Tonight I'm not sure.
At the weekend I used some potatoes for the roast that I hadn't used before and they were awful once cooked, all mush and watery no flavour, so as much as I hate it I binned the remaining potatoes and yesterday went to the farm shop (where I normally buy my potatoes but not these horrible ones!) lesson learned! He said he'd had quite a few people coming in saying they'd bought potatoes (again not from him) that were awful New ones were much better and had nice flavour.
Yesterday work was busier again, so will see what today brings, last workiing day until Saturday when I'm working again then back to work on Monday.
Keep safe and well x

Morning folks and thanks NMLC for starting us off. Yuk to the mushy spuds! In normal life my favourite spuds were Vivaldi from Sainsbobs and have been having withdrawal symptoms throughout the crisis when I couldn't get an online delivery from them!
We have evidence of overnight rain but I never heard it as, for once, I slept like a log ALL night! Sadly such nights are few and far between. Now just a cloudy day is forecast before the heat starts to rise again tomorrow. NELS I hope you are sprucing the spa up in readiness!
I was AWOL yesterday as I ended up having a busy day and not the same old same old I had anticipated! DD rang to see if I wanted to go to the garden centre with her and 2 youngest.. (As she is a single parent with 3 children under 18 we were allowed to form a bubble so not breaking any rules of the new local lockdown) It was so lovely just to get out and go somewhere different. I got a new square planter for my alpines and a couple of perennials to put in the pots with terminally ill annuals in. And another bag of compost. I shall do that today. We then had to go pick Bobi Bunnykins up from the vet where he was recovering from his op (the snip!) Then onwards to Sainsbobs. As I have a Tesco delivery booked for the w/e I didn't get much but I did grab a bag of the afore mentioned Vivaldi!) Both the garden centre and supermarket were very very quiet thankfully, as I wouldn't have gone in if rammed with people. (I had a little laugh in Sainsbobs when me and youngest DGD were passing an elderly gent. I was in front of her and the chap said to her hurry up miss your mum is leaving you behind!! I might take to wearing a mask permanently if they take nearly 50 years off you!!)
Have a good day folks and ((HUGS)) for all of poorlies, sad, worried or lonely. Take care all and stay safe x

Good morning folks. Thanks for starting us off NMLC.The weather yesterday was horrendous, just a day of heavy rain and high winds, there's lots of flooded roads now. Today is dull and wet again. I woke in the night because of an intermittent but persistent loud thud in the house. Eventually found it was being caused by the wind down a chimney which has a piece of fire board in front of it, hidden by a large painting resting against it. Moving the fire board slightly stopped the thud and I got back to sleep.Again, no plans for today. I will read and continue with the online data transcription project which is throwing up tantalising and fascinating snippets of information. Sometimes I go off to do more research on some of the people. One soldier was repatriated to a family graveyard in Fife whilst another was taken to the little village in Germany where some of my family live.I hope that everyone is doing OK today and wish you all a happy Wednesday.12

Morning all and thanks for starting us off nmlc. Hope today isn’t too busy at work.So pleased you had a trip out TA. Sounds exactly what you needed. And a compliment too! Fab 😊.Gers you are doing such good work with the transcription. It sounds fascinating too. We’re in our caravan this week, still in Scotland as we aren’t venturing far. Weather has been lovely apart from day of rain yesterday so filled that easily with lots of reading and a couple of pretty wet dog walks. Nice though. Going to see my DSis and her DH today. Really looking forward to it as I haven’t seen them since Nov.Hope lockdown lifts for those affected.Take care all and stay safe x12

Morning All
Well, it's stopped raining for now but I think it's due to return around lunchtime. Yesterday's rain was biblical all day with a stiff breeze thrown in. Lots of local flooding and I see that the Rest and Be Thankful is closed again due to a landslide, hope there's a way through as one of my lunch guests will be travelling that way today.
Apart from a bit of shopping yesterday morning I didn't do anything of interest but did get a delivery that I've been waiting for, there was a delay with production due to a fire. Felt very sorry for the delivery guy having to be out in the torrential rain.
Gers - I had to close one of the bedroom doors during the night as it was making a little squeak every now and again with the wind. Very annoying!
Sounds like you had a good day TA, hope little bunnykins is recovering.
How are you MM?
Right, off to the shower and clean the bathroom upstairs (downstairs has been done). Take care. XX12 -
Morning all! Grey again..Well yesterday turned into a cookathon and a mendathon. The toilet wasn't too bad to fix but I did have to do a bit of reasearch first, which took the longest time, to see if I could swap a ball valve and fill for a side inlet valve. So a lot fo time was spent looking at alternatives and reading specifications to go and measure sizes in the cistern. Not very interesting I know but at some point the owners changed the flush valve and it's not one of the nice slim ones, it's a large thing. And the fill comes in the same side as the handle so not a lot of room. So I went with a side inlet valve with a cup on it and it's a lot quieter than the old fill and only 6,50 to buy [ish] and also, bonus, very easy to fit. Then I got OH to chop everything up for fajitas, his request, I'm not bothered [ it's good diet food], so he did and I made him mix it up with the flavouring [ he hated that and kept pulling and sounding eww faces, I didn't tell him he was OK to wear the gloves we have with it..I mean...:) ], and I made the dough for the tortillas [ yes, with masa azul, they really are a kind of dark grey blue colour] , the tzatsiki to go with it [got hm to get the fennel, mint and cucumber from the greenhouse - much expaining of what plants look like and how much we need was made] got him to grate the cheese, and while it was cooking, made the banana cakes [ x 2] , and the apples for the crumble. So, we have liftoff of OH in the kitchen! whoopeee! And all baking has been done for the week.So today, it's visit the swedish shop with OHs mum, masks and spiky stay away sticks at the ready....I have made a list....New plates, a small saucepan, some jars and some teaspoons, two doors for a billy bookcase. There's other stuff but at least this time I shouldn't be tempted by pretties and uselesses like I usually am...Hope you all have a goodly bit of fun today, boogie till your appendages drop off...you know the drift...Welcome to Wednesday!Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi10

Morning all
Nice bright day here and meant to get hotter as the week goes on. I have a wash on the go and will hang it out when its done.
A neighbor left a load of tomatoes on my doorstep and two cues, I had a glut of tomatoes so yesterday I roasted them with a red pepper and a bendy courgette and today I will turn it into a soup which will do for our lunches for a couple of days.
Today will be the same as normal quick tidy up this morning, out with the dogs and then maybe some gardening when I get back, nothing exciting is happening atm but I quite like that. I have heard nothing from the hospital for a while but im sure they will contact me once they have news.
Nels hope you are ok ? not seen you for a couple of days xx
Have good days all xx10 -
Hello all, my computer seems to be playing silly devils this morning, opening windows that I don't want and not opening the ones that I do want. "It's probably doing something in the background" was the explanation from my tech man !The promised rain hasn't arrived yet but it is very dark and windy, so today I'm going to be cooking up a storm and spending my day chained to the cooking appliances
My fault for looking in the bottom of the freezer and finding lots of uncooked mince beef and fish that I haven't used up since before lockdown. ( I have just been listing it but not using it, probably keeping it in case of ? ) I will make a lasagne, spag bol sauce, cottage pie, fish pie and anything else that I may have the time for, of think of. It will then be portioned up and put back in the freezer, I will make some meals for Dad too. Unfortunately I'm not so adventurous a cook as some on here. I also found some home made chicken curry and I will just cook some rice, so that will do for tea today followed by a small portion of the now soft scoop ice cream.
No more cutting out to do as DD called yesterday and took it all away, she was going up to school today to decorate her new classroom so at least my thumb will be happy for a restHope everyone has a good dayStay safe and keep well.nan xxFailure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently10 -
Morning all.
Thanks for the start nmlc and I share your dislike for mushy, flavourless potatoes.
TA, glad you had a nice day out. Never mind a mask, I would need to be wearing a burka to mistaken for someone 50 years younger.
Gers, there are few occasions when I am thoroughly thankful for living as far south as you can get without being in France, but the weather makes it well worthwhile. Actually we could do with some proper rain. The garden is like concrete.
wmf, enjoy meeting your Dsis and her DH. I was so lucky to meet my DB and SIL in January when they came down from the Midlands to see my new bungalow. I so wish that I lived nearer to them, but for 60 years DB and I have lived hundreds of miles away only mèting up now and then, though there was one summer when DB and I virtually moved in with Dad while we helped him pack up and sell the family house and buy and equip a new bungalow. That was a saga in itself. You enjoy your meeting.
Camelot, see my reply to Gers.
taff, you are one of the most resourceful people I have met. I think I would like you to be my neighbour. I'll let you know if a suitably derelict residence comes on the market. If you are going to the big blue and yellow shed I could give you a shopping list. We have one not far away, but it is across the water and with no car it is an almost impossible venture.
RedRuby, let's hope that no news is good news.
Well, it's all go here today. From Friday onwards over the weekend promises to be the sort of heatwave that sees sensible folk finding a shady spot and reclining with a book and a long, cool drink.
Ill enjoy it more if everything is reasonably clean, if not tidy, in the house.
THOUGHT FOR TODAY

Nanny, you snuck in while I was slowly tapping out my post. Enjoy your cooking. I'm another old fashioned, unadventurous cook. I see others using ingredients that I have no idea what they are, let alone be able to spell. No one that I cook for has complained so I suppose that I'm getting away with it.I believe that friends are quiet angels

Really looking forward to it as I haven’t seen them since Nov.Wherever you are in Scotland I want to be there! Most of the west is deluged and now the Rest and Be Thankful is closed again, even the short diversion through the Old Military Road is under sludge and that hasn't happened for years.Yes, it's wet here though it does make the greenery lush! I had a friend who decided to spend some time in Portugal because of the rain here, he wanted some sunshine on his body, unfortunately that summer it rained all the time there too.I was unexpectedly sent a spreadsheet to work through which took a little brain power though I cheered myself up by doing some serious colouring in on it!
Now I've got a short Zoom session to host and another to sit in on later this afternoon. Just when I think there's no plans stuff jumps up at me.
TAFF - you've got me worn out just reading your post, and in awe at your practical skills! Some things are beyond my ken.
