Moving from flat (just electric) to house (gas and electric)
Hi all,
This is probably a stupid question, but if got a few different answers and am quite confused. I currently rent a flat with just electric. This rental ends on Sunday 9th. On Thursday 6th (there is 3 days crossover) I move to house I've just bought that has electric and gas.
I currently use Scottish Power for electric at my flat. They currently use British gas for gas at the house I'm buying.
What should I do to switch the electric over, and add gas?
Thanks,
Dave

You can't 'switch' utility accounts from one property to another. Take a final read when you exit, submit that to SP with your new billing address and ask for a final bill.
Take an opening read at the new flat on the day of entry for both services, and contact the supplier (BG) or suppliers for both. Submit opening reads and request them to open an account for you (you are already in a deemed account from the day you arrive and use the services). Make sure this is an account with no exit fees.
Once you have done this, you are free to start a switch to the supplier of your choice, which will take 3 to 5 weeks.
No free lunch, and no free laptop

You move in, look at the meters, read them, phone up whoever is the current supplier (may be BG for Electric too) and say hello I've just moved in, can I give you these meter readings and set up a new account for me please (you may want to set up direct debit as well to pay for the energy you'll use in the six weeks or so after moving in). You can then switch around as normal. Some tariffs are transferable from property to property, some aren't, depends whether that's an option. If you're going from all electric to gas+electric it probably won't be, since you're going most likely from Economy 7 to a regular electricity tariff.1

When you move out ring SP and give them meter readings and your forwarding address so they can send a final bill. Take a photo.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill2

None are directly transferable. Some suppliers may allow you to port an existing tariff to a new address, but you are still bound by the deemed contract arrangement with the existing supplier to register with them first and then transfer.
Unless of course you are porting a transferable tariff to a property already supplied by the same company...No free lunch, and no free laptop
