Mistaken refund from PayPal - where do I stand?

Options
Hi,
PayPal contacted me (it's legitimate) saying due to a technical error, they mistaken refunded me £400 back in April. They want their money back.
Where do I stand on this? And what are the consequences of refusing (mainly because I haven't got £400 in these corona ridden times).
Thanks

If you can't repay it in full, then you'll need to arrange a repayment plan.

The consequence of refusing would be the same as any other debt, so it'll be much cheaper to sort it now.

Why did you spend it if you knew it wasnt yours? 🤔

You don't have to refuse to repay it. As zx81 says, you need to make an arrangement. No big deal. In the past, PayPal mistakenly refunded small sums of money twice to my daughter and she sent the payments straight back but on one occasion there were complications that we still don't understand and her account was frozen. She'd done nothing wrong and it was eventually sorted out but not before we had to get a third party financial expert involved. PayPal eventually apologised and paid some compensation but they don't always get things right.

They can't expect you to pay it all back straight away so negotiate with them, it's not an unreasonable request.

Surely the OP hasnt spent it, knowing all along the money wasnt his, so this thread is moot.

Had you spent £400 prior to the refund, and as such expecting a refund.
If not then it should have been left alone.
But as zx81. You need to speak to them and arrange a repayment plan. Or they will lock the account & send debt collectors after you.

First thing you need to do is verify what they are saying.
if it was not your money then you need to make an arrangement to pay it back.
something will keep them off your back.
if you do nothing they’ll probably sell it on and then you’ll be hassled by nasty debt collector.
