I can honestly say I have never received any form of schedule or agreement.

When insurance is set up, you are posted cancellation rights with a basic quote and terms (a bit like a car insurance schedule).  That is posted direct from the insurer.    There is also a separate letter telling you about the direct debit.   There is also the information issued at point of sale.   If it was arranged post January 2005, then there is a further statement of demands and needs.     These are issued at different phases and by different people.    So, it is viewed as being highly unlikely you didnt receive anything.      However, the further back you go in time, prior to regulation, the less documentation there was.  However, complaints are measured on the rules in place at the point of sale. Not what happened in later years.

Also, having checked the bank statements I can get hold of ( my mortgage was paid off just over 5 years ago ) there is nothing on any of them to show any payments out which are ' out of the ordinary'. By that I mean I know what my monthly outgoings were and to whom and nothing untoward was charged.

The Halifax MPPI plan was known as their total mortgage protection plan (TMPP).    It was a multi-segment plan that offered life assurance, income protection, critical illness cover and MPPI.  You could have any combination of those segments.  Some people may have had just life assurance, others just MPPI or multiple segments.

It was a standalone monthly direct debit and not built into the mortgage.
