Car dealer arranging road tax
I have paid a deposit on a car and plan to collect it in two weeks and complete the registration. I got a call from the car dealer to ask if I want six or 12 months tax, I said 6 but then rang back to ask: can I not do the tax myself on the day as I don’t even have the green slip or log book, it’s not yet registered in my name, he doesn’t have any of my details so I don’t understand how he is going to tax it on my behalf. He said he can do it at the post office but I am worried it will be void when l collect the car as he doesn’t have the insurance details I bought. He explained the tax has to be backdated to the 1st of the month of purchase. Sorry if I am being slow but what should I do? He’s asked me to pay him in cash on the day I collect the car. Does all this sound legit? They seem a bit funny about this!

Having insurance on the vehicle is no longer a requirement to tax it and hasn't been for a few years.1

He has the V5C/2 New Keeper slip doc ref. That's all that's needed to tax it "in your name".
He's got your name and address (I presume!) so he'll do the keeper change online, which'll generate your V5C, which'll turn up in the post in a week or so.2 -
Okie dokies. I'll try not to worry about it. Thanks!Achievements:

I have just taxed a car on line using the V5C2 new keeper slip and it didn't want any information, all it wanted was my money Using the V5C2 number, which is slightly different from the V5C number, lets the system know it is being taxed by a new keeper.
