I'm new to this quote thing as it's so darn hard to get round here unless it's a big job so some idea would be appreciated.
After several tries with no quote submitted I've got one from a well established plumber/heating engineer for my small bathroom - remove disabled shower unit and some board glued to tiles and replace with bath and new tiles over old if possible. Install shower with wall inset controls, remove and resite new toilet on other wall, remove and replace basin, remove and resite radiator. The radiator backing onto this one at the moment is dripping from a joint which is to be repaired at the same time. Also removal of all the old stuff.
The quote is for £3,000 for the work and I buy the items.
It sort of seems reasonable to me for the skill and work involved but never having done this I have no idea if it's a good price, a high price or just about right. It would put my mind at rest to have some idea. Of course I'll ask which year he can get round to it before accepting ;) Thanks.

I paid about £2,500, but I had a stud wall removed between toilet and bathroom, floor made good etc. Builder supplied and fitted sanitary ware, electric shower and I had waterproof wall panels put up instead of tiling. It was a part of major works, so might have been cheaper than usual.

"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

If that price included the sanitaryware, it is inexpensive.

£3k is reasonable I would say. Ask your builder to point you in the direction of a reliable bathroom supplier.

Thank you both. So not excessive which is what I needed. There's so much work around here and a lot of money spent that I;m finding it hard to get quotes for any job to make comparisons.
The removal of these wall panels is a major part and having tiles which probably putting people off when there are a lot of easier jobs. Also setting the shower controls in flush is more expensive.
Rosa I already have the list with the local bathroom supplier and the plumber did ask if I'd had a 10 or 20% discount of some sort of the fittings. I'm trying to be cautious but I've waited 18mts to get this far and if it was a yellow bath with pink spots I think I'd accept it right now!
Should come in at £3.600 at the most with the sanitryware.

  • I wish I had the number of the builder who quoted you, it seems reasonable. I had 10 quotes and all wanted appx 5K labour only. In the end the whole new bathroom came to appx 12K. What I didn't realise was the 5k labour only, the building materials i.e tile adhesive, etc would come to £1, 500 on top of that, not including tiles, sink, toilet, shower, towel rail etc.

Well that makes me feel a bit better Neenie, though he's not a builder, he's a plumber/heating engineer.
But I'm negotiating to change just moving the location of existing  toilet and sink a tad and not moving the radiator. The rest is as put. I realised that appearance wasn't everything and didn't allow for storage.  Hope he doesn't ditch me for changing my mind lol.
So the overspil to be to service the boiler and radiators which may need flushing. That's the advantage of his trade rather than a renovator or builder.
My neighbours designed and built bathroom which is lovely was by a local bathroom and kitchen company.
Your guy does seem to be charging for everything he can to a ridiculous point. Did he not put in the quote 'labour only'?
