Internet in shared house

Options
I wonder if anybody has suggestions re the best way to get on the internet in a shared house.

My daughter has just returned to Leeds Uni for her 2nd year and is sharing a house with 4 friends. They are trying to arrange an internet connection and it's not clear which is the best way to achieve this. There is an NTL socket (and probably a BT as well) in the house but they don't require a landline phone. Ideally they would like to each have a seperate connection. They approached NTL and seem to have been told that there's a £50 installation fee and a one month wait for installation(It's not clear to me what the monthly fee will be)

Any ideas anyone?

  • They will be working at college most of the time.
Surely they will have free access to the internet there will they not.

  • I share an NTL connection with 6 others in Cardiff. I know that last year there was a student deal which offered a 9 month contract and free installation. Keep a look out for leaflets from the local reps.

I think that offically you are not allowed to 'share' the connection, but i don't know of anyone here that has had a warning.

Not much you can do about the delay though I'm afraid!

Might be worth setting up a network - get broadband for one PC and then link it to all the others (wirelessly I imagine).

Probably still works out as cheaper than everyone having a phone line and dial up - do unmetered (with no limits) broadband and everyone pays a quarter?

The computing service here at Bristol uni has some good information which I'm sure applies to Leeds as well (cable in Bristol is Telewest not NTL but I'm sure it's similar):

BT Broadband are doing a student offer (9 month contract) for students who sign up b4 November.

I'm with Fast24.  My second contract with them.  They do a 3 month contract and you can leave whenever you like after this time.  Prices are lesser than BT Broadband + half price installation offer at the moment. https://www.fast24.co.uk

PS I'd like to say that travelling to uni for net access is a bit of a pain and you can't beat having net at home. You wouldn't have individual lines but share a broadband connection. I'm sure people on this board can help you with networking problems.

8 of us in a house in notts sharing 1.5mbit ntl cable and its fine, easiest way is to set it up wirelessly, dont even need a router can just run it through peer2peer connections, just buy a wireless card for each computer an find someone who can set it up. i'm studying comp sci and i got a fair amount of experiece with networks but most comp sci students should be able to set it up
  • Surely you have to have the one directly connect computer on all the time? A router will get around this problem.

in a shared house there is no reason why 1 broadband contract can't be shared.. get a router and away you go..

ntl are doing a tv, telephone, broadband package for students which is a good deal.. they're stood outside my uni every day advertising so are probably near hers too
