Hello, an elderly 80 year old has been asked to join a BT MeetMe call.
They will receive a phone call and have to answer but from the instructions below they are unsure if they need to:
press * and keep holding it down and then press 1 to join the call.
Or do they press * then let go and then press 1 to join the call.

They would also like to know if they can mute their line by just pressing the mute button on their handset instead of pressing *6 as instructed below.
If anyone can advise on which is correct that would be most appreciated. Thanks.

To join the hearing:
  1. press ‘*’ (star) key and number one to join
  2. say your name
  3. press the ‘#’ (hash) key
  4. once you’re in the hearing, stay on mute until you’re asked to speak
"To mute your line, press *6 and to unmute, press *6 again."

Holding down a button will just generate a continuous tone, if you press another button the phone won't transmit it, it'll just continue broadcasting whatever's held down.

Seems straight forward to me, press Star, then press 1.  say "Joe Bloggs", then press #.  If you had to hold it down it would say so.

Mute is the Zoom equivalent of turning off the microphone, if you have a "Secrecy" button on the phone, that'll do the same job, but it won't mute you on the call, but it'll achieve the same effect.  Only caveat is you normally have to hold this down, as it deactivates when you release the button.

Does she know who is calling .
Last time i looked it was a BT Business  conferencing  service  .
  • Thanks I've passed on your advice and they will press each button in sequence and avoid holding any button down. They have said they will be somewhere quiet so hopefully they won't have to mute but the mute button should hopefully suffice if needed. Regards.

The mute is to stop them saying things like "you are talking bo****ks" until it's their turn to say it out loud, not suggesting of course that they would they may be like me and say something stronger, oh and if like me they pass a loud fart

She can either mute her phone in the normal way if she's used to doing that, it's ultimately just a phone call. Of course if she mutes her phone in the regular way and presses *6 she'll have to unmute herself both ways before anyone will be able to hear her.
Although the call quality on BT Meetme is so awful nobody will be able to hear what she's saying anyway.

The county courts are often using BT MeetMe for telephone hearings in lieu of in-person hearings. Whilst this call may not be related to the courts, nor a parking case, the Telephone Hearings thread in the Parking board may offer some tips that you find useful.

Thanks for the additional information and advice. I've warned them that the call quality may be poor which may be an issue as they often have to ask people to speak up and repeat things when on the phone due to age related issues. The only thing I could suggest to them is possibly putting the phone on speaker mode.
