  • Thanks Sandtree - we had decided to stick with our current arrangement (frustrating as it is) and see if anything comes from the ombusdman (email replay stating a few weeks wait) but I am not hopeful. As you say, not worth risking as the potential impact is too devastating. Pretty unsatisfactory though.

I can't answer your specific question, but I've always erred on the side of total disclosure with insurance matters - a potential small saving in premium might prove to be an expensive mistake in the event of a claim, where you don't get this right - as you're already contemplating.

I make and sell jewellery and work from home.  I have a domestic [contents and buildings] policy as a 'home worker' for the home (that covers computers and office equipment) and a separate business policy for stock, equipment, tools, materials, indemnity, cash and stock in transit to events etc.  Each policy is aware of the other and it was the household company that suggested how I insure the business, once I changed direction a few years ago.

I use "link" (I started with a smaller company they took over) for my business and as they do a number of specialist policies, for homes and businesses, may be able to offer advice on your scenario.
Yes, I agree on the disclosure as you might as well not bother to take it out otherwise as it is potentially worthless. Your situation sounds similar to ours....but we were told that re. our house cover, it would not be valid for buildings and content given that there was business use (other than clerical) being undertaken from the home. Are you 100% certain you are covered for your house? I might give them a try.

Apologies @inspector_lashford I actually tried to do some work today.  My home isn't insured with Insurance Choice, only the business.  But yes, my home policy states that the home is used for business purposes and there is a value for business equipment included in the policy (I've been self-employed and working from home for over 30 years now), as mentioned earlier and we have made several successful claims in the time I've been working from home.

Thanks BooJewels...would you mind sharing who you are with for the home buildings and contents insurance? They sound more progressive than anyone we have spoken to in the past! It would be nice to have business cover to though realistically the stock doesn't cost much (though the retail price of the final work does in theory) and there is the value of the outbuilding (which I would hope is covered under the main house insurance but if that is too difficult then it would not be the end of the world if not covered as not genuinely life changing if burned down).
