Next doors link detached potential Garage conversion

Hi everyone, I’m new to this forum but I am hoping you can give me some advice.

Me and my partner moved into our first home 9 months ago and we love it. We bought a 3 bed link-detached. It is a link detached in the fact that next door is connected by their single storey garage to our single story garage. We have nothing to the other side as we are on an end plot.

Our adjoining neighbours have informed us that they plan to convert their garage into another bedroom.

Is this likely to affect our house value, i.e. reclassify our home as a semi-detached. (I do realise that link-detached is a marketing tactic and not really a category).

If this is likely to cause a problem with house value is there anything I can do? As far as I’m aware they won’t need planning permission to convert the garage. So it feels there is nothing I can do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Your house will still be link detached. There are both advantages and disadvantages with a bedroom as there are with a garage. So probably personal choice as to which someone prefers to be next door to.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Our house was advertised as link detached in the same setup as yours. When we moved in we noticed they have converted part of their garage (they were double length tandem garages) to a dining room, so somehow we are sort of semi-detached. Does it affect the value, not in the slightest.  I think they are probably more aware of us than we are of them as our garage door is particularly noisy when we close it. We hear nothing from their dining room.

It will not change the value of your house negatively but will probably affect your house positively as if you should ever need to increase living space in your house you know that you can do it as others have already done(precedence). You now have more options for use of your garage. So it’s like a good selling point really being able to convert into different use of one should want to.

Unless the house is in a conservation area, or similar, this would be permitted development, so whether the neighbour does it or not makes no difference at all. There aren't any more options than there were before.
