At some point you or your family will need to be planning on how the purchase of any return flight is funded.  The travel insurer will not be booking and paying for it. It would have to be paid for by you and a claim made later from the insurer.

To be honest my main concern would be is the travel insurance is still valid.  You need to read your policy and check and/or contact them.  I sincerely hope not but you could be in Columbia without any medical cover during a worldwide pandemic.

There were two U.K. Government repatriation flights from Columbia, one on 1st May and the other 4th May.  The Government had a process and a loan scheme for those who could not pay prior to the flight.  Cost likely to have been in the £600-£1000 range.  Let’s hope the travel insurer, if still cover in place, does not view the fact that you should of made efforts to return to the U.K. when instructed and then cap any future flight cost to you at the amount you would of paid for one of the repatriation services.

I did wonder why they didn’t hop on one of those flights, it certainly would have made things easier!
  • Where have you been staying in Colombia?  Do you have family there?  It would explain why you or your mum don't seem to have been in a rush to get you home.   Hopefully your insurance will step up but do something now and don't leave it another few months.  If they don't then either you or your mum are probably going to have to put the cost on a credit card.  That is if you want to return that is?  How long can you legally stay in Colombia as a visitor?   Don't get on the wrong side of them there or you could end up in the clink.

The insurance company would have covered the cost of a repatriation flight. No reason to cover an alternative flight at greater expense when you decide to return.

Maybe try pricing up a flight instead of using the figure supplied by Avianca.  Skyscanner are showing one way from Bogota to UK for well under £300 in January.
