Extra cost for rebooking package holiday

Hi All,
I have a £500 deposit down for a £4,000 package holiday to America in October. The firm is requesting either the full payment this week, with a credit note if cancelled. A rebooking using the existing deposit. Or a cancellation now and losing the deposit.
I do have insurance from January for this holiday, so if it is cancelled
due to travel restrictions I should be covered, but in theory the
holiday could go ahead this October with quarantine measures and
significant hotel/attraction disruption which I don't think my insurance
would cover.
Unfortunately the offers they have given to rebook for next year are significantly more. Around £400 to move to March, and £650 for the same October flight but in 2012.
I feel like because the company already has my deposit they have no incentive to offer a good price on rebooked holidays. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on how I could rebook this holiday or recover costs effectively?
Thank you.

Hi, So what do you think your insurance would cover you for? If the holiday is cancelled you should get a refund from your travel agents. Your insurance should cover you if you travel in October but you would need to check the exclusions in the t's and c's.
So you are asking what to do and all comes down to: if you do not want to travel this year no matter and you only lose the deposit if you cancel now, it might be worth considering? That ends all stress and worry. If you do not wish to lose £500 and I agree it is a considerable amount, the alternative is to fork out the £4,000 and then sit and wait to see what happens in October. As you say the 3rd option is rebooking to next year but that will involve even more expense and still lots of uncertainty so I don't think I would go for option 3. However, all down to personal choice. Good luck, not an easy decision to make.0 -
The options you have been given seem correct and fairly standard.
Personally I can’t see a holiday to the USA going ahead in October. I think Trump will keep the restrictions on travel from the U.K. and Europe until after the election.0
